Triptic Dance
("Processional and Dance")
Pierre Beauchamp (1689-1761)
arr. by Michèle Sharik
Pierre Beauchamp was born at Versailles, into a family of French dance masters. He débuted at the court of Louis XIV at age 12, in 1648, in the Ballet du dérèglement des passions and was made director of the Académie Royale de Danse in 1671. Beauchamp was principal choreographer to Molière's acting company during 1664-1673, as well as ballet master at the Académie Royale de Musique and Compositeur des Ballets du Roi. He also gave dance lessons to Louis XIV for over twenty-two years. In these positions, he was highly influential in the development of French baroque dance. He continued to choreograph and dance at the Court of Versailles after the death of Jean-Baptiste Lully in 1687; however, choreography and composition of music and ballets for the Jesuit Colleges became his primary occupation from 1697. He died in Paris in 1705.
Michèle has arranged Triptic Dance as a Theme and Variations, with a single contrasting refrain between each variation. Notated for 3 to 5 octaves of bells, with 2 octaves of chimes, it may be played by as few as six ringers, or as many as 15 ringers. Optional percussion may be also be used. Using the included suggested assignments, the piece may be played in "surround sound", or antiphonally, or even as a Dance piece with the groups moving through the performance space. Have fun with it!
"Triptic Dance" was chosen as a Massed Ringing Selection for the
2019 Southern California Spring Ring.
NEW! Michèle has compiled a list of hymn texts that will work with the recurring chime refrain. Use any of these texts, or choose another text that fits your needs, then use this piece in your worship services. Please let Michèle know if you do! Download the PDF list here!
